چکیده

People often act together with a shared purpose; they collaborate on a group action or activity. An increasing number of computer applications also require collaboration among various systems and users. The plans for such collaborative activities must be formed with others, not in isolation. Groups may persist over long periods of time (as do orchestras, sports teams, and systems administration groups), form spontaneously for a single group activity (as when a group forms for a programming project), or come together repeatedly (as do surgical teams and airline crews). A major challenge for researchers in Artificial Intelligence is to determine ways to construct computer systems that are able to act effectively as collaborative team members. Collaborative activities require more than the sum of individual plans. Participants must form commitments not only to the group action itself, but also to the activities of other participants that are in service of this group activity. Group decision-making processes are required to expand partial plans to more complete ones. Furthermore, when conflicts arise from resource bounds, participants must weigh commitments to group activities against those for individual activities. This article briefly reviews the major features of one model of collaborative planning, SharedPlans (Grosz and Kraus, 1996, 1999), describes several current efforts to develop collaborative planning agents and systems for human–computer communication based on this model, and discusses empirical research aimed at determining commitment strategies in the SharedPlans context. This research has been supported in part by National Science Foundation grants IRI 95-25915, IRI-9618848 and CDA-9401024. The authors thank David Sullivan for his helpful comments on earlier drafts and for his assistance with the section on empirical studies.

User interface a ordances in a planning representation

This article shows how the concept of a ordance in the user interface ts into a wellunderstood arti cial intelligence (AI) model of acting in an environment. In this model AI planning research is used to interpret a ordances in terms of the costs associated with the generation and execution of operators in a plan. We motivate our approach with a brief survey of the a ordance literature and its ...

Scaling Up a Strengthened Youth-Friendly Service Delivery Model to Include Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives in Ethiopia: A Mixed Methods Retrospective Assessment

Background Donor funded projects are small scale and time limited, with gains that soon dissipate when donor funds end. This paper presents findings that sought to understand successes, challenges and barriers that influence the scaling up and sustainability of a tested, strengthened youth-friendly service (YFS) delivery model providing an expanded contraceptive method choice in one locat...

Refinement Planning and Acting

In several publications over the past few years, we argued that the automated planning research literature has underestimated the importance and difficulty of deliberative acting. We have outlined an algorithm, RAE, for deliberative acting. We now give give an overview of SeRPE, a planning algorithm designed to be integrated with RAE. Additional details about both RAE and SeRPE are in Chapter 3...

Blended Planning and Acting: Preliminary Approach, Research Challenges

In a recent position paper in Artificial Intelligence, we argued that the automated planning research literature has underestimated the importance and difficulty of deliberative acting, which is more than just interleaving planning and execution. We called for more research on the AI problems that emerge when attempting to integrate acting with planning. To provide a basis for such research, it...

A Flexible ANML Actor and Planner in Robotics

Planning in robotics must be considered jointly with Acting. Planning is an open loop activity which produces a plan, based on action models, the current state of the world and the desired goal state. Acting, on the other hand, is a closed loop on the environment activity (to execute command and perceive the state of the world). These two deliberative activities must be integrated and need to h...

Action coordination in groups and individuals: learning anticipatory control.

When individuals act alone, they can internally coordinate the actions at hand. Such coordination is not feasible when individuals act together in a group. The present research examines to what extent groups encounter specific challenges when acting jointly and whether these challenges impede extending planning into the future. Individuals and groups carried out a tracking task that required le...
